Repent America postpones campus tour
Repent America (RA), an evangelistic organization dedicated to spreading its message through open air preaching, postponed its tour date to KU.
Director of RA, Michael Marcavage, said in an interview Tuesday that “core participants were unable to meet on the preemptive dates, and there were also personal reasons for the postponement.” One of the personal reasons mentioned by Marcavage is that he is currently working to appeal the United States of America vs. Michael A. Marcavage case on June 13, 2008 where Marcavage was found guilty.
The appeal follows the ruling of U.S. Magistrate Judge Arnold C. Rapoport, who found Marcavage guilty for continuing to preach on public property to those waiting in line to see the Liberty Bell. It was here Marcavage attempted to “spread the word of God” and also preach against abortion.
Supervising park ranger Alan Saperstein redirected Marcavage to a free speech zone, located away from the entrance and exit of the Liberty Bell Center. Marcavage refused to relocate and was later cited for violating the Code of Federal Regulations, which stated that he was interfering with agency functions by preaching and ministering to people on the public sidewalk.
Marcavage also said that while RA considered stopping at Kutztown between Sept. 28 and Oct. 9, the university was not a predetermined target for the college tour.
“We decided to tour through the western part of Pennsylvania,” said Marcavage, “because we had not been there before.”
RA is considering visiting KU’s campus in the spring, however. When asked for an exact date Marcavage replied, “When we come, you’ll know.”
RA members believe it is their duty as Christians to spread the Gospel, and help as many people as they can repent for their sins, so that they too may enter Heaven. While Marcavage acknowledges this message may not always be well received, he and his organization are determined to spread their message to as many people as possible.
