A costly loss

KU women’s field hockey suffered a 1-0 loss against current last place C.W. Post (PSAC East) during their season finale on Saturday in Brookville, NY.

The only goal, scored by Post’s Krystal Napolitano during a fast break, came in overtime. KU goalie, freshman Karly Waltman, made two saves, but let by the game-winning goal in OT. This was Waltman’s second start this season.

The Golden Bears had six shots on goal during the contest, giving Pioneer goalie Cortney Colern six saves. Freshman Jenna Gregory took the lead in shots on goal with two, while seniors Carrie Healy and Lauren Solley and juniors Courtney Zook and Anne Waapu each had one. KU attempted two shots on goal in the first half and four in the second. Even though the Golden Bears doubled Post’s shots on goal for the game, it was not enough to defeat the Pioneers.

This is not the only time the Golden Bears and the Pioneers have faced off in overtime this season. On Sept. 26 they battled in double overtime with Post winning by one goal (4-3).

KU finished the season 12-8 overall and 4-4 in the PSAC East Division. The Golden Bears missed making it to the PSAC East playoffs by one game behind East Stroudsburg. Bloomsburg took the top spot.

The Golden Bears ended the season in third place in the PSAC East Division. Solley led the team with 13 goals and 31 points. Gregory was second in goals with 12 (two from Saturday’s game) and third for the Golden Bears was Waapu with 10 (one from Saturday’s game).

With only three seniors on this season’s roster and two of this year’s top three scorers set to remain on the Golden Bear roster, KU women’s field hockey looks toward solid next season standings and hopefully a higher rank in the PSAC conference.
